The Nansemond Painted Hive Body Competition
This is an art competition to showcase hive bodies that are painted, judged, then auctioned off to support honey bee research.

2023 Painted Hive Body Art Competition

Can you Believe this is Year 10?!

Join us as we celebrate the Honey Bee and raise money for Bee Research with our 10th Annual Painted Hive Body Program. We are still working on the venues they will be shown at next spring and what dates they will be due and auctioned off. You can still pick up your hive body box and start painting NOW! Call Jane 757-214-7494 and she will help you get your box. School children up to Grade 12 are free, Amateur Adults $20, Professional Artists $25. Painting a Full hive is $50. This entry fee money provides the prize money for the art competition part of the program, and who doesn't like a little extra cash? The boxes will then be auctioned off and the profits from this will provide the 2023 PHB Grant money. If you know a beekeeper that does any kind of study on bees, let them know about this resource.
Check back here for updates on deadlines and venues.

Congratulations to our 2021 Grant Recipient!
Ruth Meredith, VT Graduate, NBA member, and long-time beekeeper, has been selected for the latest grant. She is doing research on Queen mating habits. Do they always return to their same mating NUC? Does marking a Virgin affect mating success? Does Temp Queen Lure have a positive effect on a Queen returning to her mating NUC, or a rogue Queen? Is the percent higher than a mating NUC without Temp Queen Lure? We are looking forward to seeing what conclusions her research draws.
